Helpful Hints and Tips

Safety and Disposal Tips

  • Keep syringes and needles out of the reach of children.
  • The syringe, needle and vial adapter should NEVER be reused.
  • NEVER recap a needle.
  • Immediately throw away the used syringe and needle in a puncture-resistant container. DO NOT remove the plunger from the syringe before disposal.
  • A puncture-resistant container made specifically for disposing of used syringes and needles may be used. DO NOT recycle the container.
  • Keep the container out of the reach of children. When the container is about two-thirds full, dispose of it as instructed by your or your child's doctor, nurse or pharmacist. Follow any special provincial laws regarding the proper disposal of needles and syringes.
  • The ENBREL vials, vial adapters and used swabs should be placed in the trash, unless your or your child's doctor, nurse or pharmacist instructs otherwise. The dose tray and cover may be recycled.
  • Always check the date you have written on the ENBREL vial. Discard the ENBREL vial if more than 14 days have passed since the ENBREL solution was mixed.

Scheduling Tips

  • Set aside specific times every week to prepare and give your injection of ENBREL.
  • Be sure to stick to your regular treatment schedule, even when you are travelling.

Storage Tips

  • The ENBREL dose tray containing powder must be refrigerated at 2° to 8°C. DO NOT FREEZE ENBREL.
  • Reconstituted (mixed) solutions of ENBREL in the vial must always be kept cool at 2° to 8°C until you are ready to use them, with overall room temperature exposure of less than 12 hours during storage and handling/usage.
  • Throw away mixed ENBREL solution after 14 days.
  • PRODUCT STABILITY AND STERILITY CANNOT BE GUARANTEED AFTER 14 DAYS.
  • If you are travelling, ENBREL can be carried in a small, insulated cooler bag with an ice pack for short periods (less than 12 hours).

Travelling Tips

  • When you travel, the dose tray for ENBREL can be carried in a small, insulated cooler bag with a frozen ice pack for short periods.
  • If you need a travel cooler bag to transport ENBREL, call Enliven Services at 1-877-9-ENBREL (1-877-936-2735), 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and they will send it to you free of charge.
  • Be sure to use a cooling method that will allow ENBREL to be maintained between 2° and 8°C.
  • If you are going to be travelling with ENBREL for more than a few hours, arrange to keep ENBREL at the proper temperature.
  • Some hotels may have a small refrigerator available on request for your convenience. Check with the hotel before your arrival.

Travelling by Air

  • If you are travelling by air, you should be able to keep ENBREL with you at all times provided you have a letter from your doctor.
  • For added protection and easy identification, keep syringes in their original packaging in the cooler bag.
  • Regulations may differ between airlines, and even between airports, so please call the airline ahead of time, or call Enliven Services at 1-877-9ENBREL (1-877-936-2735), 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for more specific information.

Labeling and Storing Tips for Free-hand Method

  • The vial of ENBREL should be labelled with the date immediately after mixing the ENBREL powder and liquid.
  • Write this date in the area marked "Mixing Date:" on the supplied sticker and attach the sticker to the vial.
  • After you have withdrawn the dose of ENBREL that you need, store the ENBREL vial (in the dose tray) in the refrigerator at 2° to 8°C as soon as possible, but always within 4 hours of mixing the solution.
  • The ENBREL solution may be used up to 14 days after the mixing if stored in the original vial at 2° to 8°C, with overall temperature exposure of less than 12 hours during storage and handling.
  • You should discard the ENBREL vial and any remaining solution if it is not used within 14 days.
  • DO NOT mix any remaining liquid in one vial of ENBREL solution with another.
